The cheapest is not always the best!

A customer hired a contractor for stump grinding. The contractor did the estimate and the stump removal project the same day. This is yet another example of why the cheapest estimate is not always the best estimate.
In New York State, stump grinding falls under 811 “Call Before You Dig” requirements. Under NYS Code Rule 753, professional excavators are required to contact UDig NY before digging. A 72-hour notice must be given so utility companies can come out and mark underground utility lines such as gas, electric, and other public service lines. What many homeowners may not realize is that privately owned underground pipes, cables, and other lines on private property may not be marked. On top of that, the intense ground vibration from stump grinding alone can potentially damage or rupture nearby gas, water, or other buried lines.
Thankfully, this situation did not turn into something much worse. It is an important reminder that hiring a qualified, knowledgeable, and properly insured contractor matters. Cheapest is not always safest.
